Apart from being a controversial movie in India[4] with respect to its theme,[5] the Screenplay of the movie was added to the permanent core collection in Library of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences before its release in 2011.[6][7]
The movie is tributed to the 250,000 people who lost their lives in the 1975 Banqiao Dam disaster in China.[9] As per producer-director Sohan, "The central character of the story is this dam and the life of a few mariners living near it. There are nine characters in the movie, representing the Navarasa. I believe that every individual is born with a sthayi bhava, but when his suppressed feelings burst, like a dam, it changes."[10]

Dam999 started its shooting at Alleppey, Kerala.[15] A number of unexpected hurdles were faced by the crew while shooting the movie. Veteran Malayalam actor Thilakan, who was supposed to be a part of Dam 999, was made to drop out of the project due to his battle with AMMA. However the problem was solved by replacing Thilakan with Bollywood Actor Rajit Kapoor. Thilakan was paid seven lakhs as compensation.[16][17][18] While the prior issue was still simmering, another lead character from India walked out due to disputes with the crew, while the shoot was in progress, bringing the movie to a halt.[19] The star cast of the movie was immediately altered and the initial sequences in Kerala was completed as planned.[20][21] From various locations such as Ooty in India, the shoot of the movie progressed to Fujairah, UAE, where Dam 999 has captured a couple of its sequences on an oil tanker. The climax of the movie was compiled in Ramoji film city in Hyderabad, built by the Art Director Padmashree Thotta Tharani.[22][23][24] While in the stage of post production the movie grabbed the attention owing to its story and title. Debates regarding the ever existing fear of outdated dams have started. The visual effects were done by EyeQube Studios.[25]
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) complained that the film is based on the Mullaperiyar Dam dispute between Tamil Nadu and Kerala.[27] The DMK party chief M. Karunanidhi urged the Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalitha to ban the movie considering "people's safety".[28] A day before its scheduled release on 25 November, the film was banned by the State Government of Tamil Nadu on the grounds that the release would disturb the cordial relations between Tamil Nadu and Kerala.[29]
He said the State suspended the screening of the Hollywood movie without hearing him or affording him an opportunity for clarification. The "arbitrary, unilateral and unjustified act" violated his fundamental right to freedom guaranteed under Article 19(1) (a).Explaining the contents of the film, he said it "spreads the message about the consequences of dam disasters around the world."[30]

Prologue: Watched this movie from 'Sridar'(theatre) in 3d today. As it was a movie by a keralite, & we are having a similar problem here in kerala , (Mullaperiyar Dam) the urge to watch the movie was very high. Read in newspapers that the script made to the Oscar library. So altogether, the expectations about this movie was high.Story: Its all about the figure 999 which has got importance all along. Two mariners coming home. Both having their own personal problems. The director tried to connect the dam to the characters in the movie. Their emotions holding back like a Dam & finally dam breaks at the same time the emotions are also opened. I could understand the story of 'Inception' in one watch. But this was complicated. It fails to connect with the viewers.Cast: Casting was like 'hmm.ok'. Thats it. Everybody did their part. But apart from the main actors, all others lacked professionalism. It was like they were made to act.You could feel, you are watching a movie. You couldn't live in it.Music: There is no notable music to show up off in this movie. Background score was poor. Actually we have seen lot of movies, though being average, getting uplifted by the background score. The songs were not impressive.Camera: Cinematography was good. But you don't notice it, since the movie is boring. My Verdict: This movie is boring. Will make you feel like a loser. It fails to communicate with the viewers. Not at all recommended. Im gonna watch a good movie from my library & save my day. phew... 3/10.
The Title shouts DAM, the posters speak DAM, but where was the DAM in the movie. Except for 4-5 minutes of water breaking through the dam and gushing in to the nearby towns, rest of the movie is a troubled love story. I went with expectations to see good 3D effects, sometimes a movie may not be up to the mark, but special effects and 3D feel keeps you glued to the screen but not this one. Throughout the movie i can count and say there are only three instances where you feel that its a 3D movie; one when title appears "A Sohan Roy Film", two when the title appears " DAM 999" and three... (well find it for yourself, because now my conscience kills to write so badly about something). All in all the movie fails to reflect the tragedy, sorrow or helpless situation of the people which is very expected when such an event occurs, mostly because it spent all its time in portraying the tension between the two love birds who cant be together for astrological reasons, but the the director fails to even build up that emotional attachment and deliver it to the hearts of the viewers. In conclusion I would say you can watch the movie for the sake of it, but don't expect any hair raising scenes, "Spectacular 3D experience" (as the poster claims), better don't hope anything.
When will these Film crew stop posting their own reviews says the film is great,it better than Titanic,It's original than beautiful mind, grafix beats 2012..and more Sh*t.It's just another borin movie?Turtle story,Awful grapics, and more over a disaster story with hardly less disaster in it.Unfortunately Sohan Roy puts too many sub plots that the main plot looks rather lost in the crowd.Unfortunately the movie was supposed to be about a dam disaster and we have come in for some stereoscopic graphic fun. Finally the Dam does break but is it a bit too late? Overall it's a lost cause. It's a disastrous disaster movie.
Disaster movies are quite a rare genre in Indian Cinema but a genre that is heavily liked by Indians with the super success of Independence day, Armageddon, Day After Tomorrow and the recent record breaking 2012 standing testimony to the fact. Dam999 is supposed to be based on a dam disaster in China but setting it in Kerala, the statement it wants to make is quite clear. Unfortunately Sohan Roy puts too many sub plots that the main plot looks rather lost in the crowd.
An impending horror and 9 different people having different problems face the same incident differently. Every single person takes one of the navarasa's to give us an array of emotions. Unfortunately the movie was supposed to be about a dam disaster and we have come in for some stereoscopic graphic fun. Finally the Dam does break but is it a bit too late? 2ff7e9595c
